UCSF Disability Information Summary

Dated 5/19/04

Please note, this information was gathered by a postdoc and may no longer be up to date.

Standard Insurance company provides UCSF's disability insurance. Here is some clarification about what they provide. Because the 2-week pre- and 6-week post-delivery disability coincides with the 30-day waiting period, we get up to two more weeks of disability pay if we choose to start leave 2 weeks before the delivery date. Here are the options:
  1. If we leave two weeks before the due date, plus the 6 weeks after, that's a total of 8 weeks, or 56 days. Of those 56 days, 30 days are not covered because of the waiting period, leaving 26 days of disability pay.
  2. If we leave after the due date, that's a total of 6 weeks, or 42 days. Of those 42 days, 30 days are not covered, leaving 12 days of disability pay.
Of course, this can be variable, depending on exactly when you start your leave--you'd have to do the math. Financially, it's more advantageous to leave earlier because the 30-day waiting period also begins earlier. However, you'd also miss out on saving those 2 weeks for after the baby is born. Hope this helps.
