UCSF Postdoctoral Parental Leave Summary

Dated 5/18/04

Please note, this information was gathered by a postdoc and may no longer be up to date.

I'm pleased to inform you that Dean Cliff Attkisson confirms that UCSF will continue to honor it's original postdoc parental leave policy as stated in the Manual for the Appointment of Postdoctoral Scholars (revised 1999), (http://saawww.ucsf.edu/graduate/pdf/manual_appt.pdf) which states:

Parental Leave with Pay

It is the policy of the Graduate Council that all postdoctoral scholars officially appointed in the Graduate Division and receiving financial support, regardless of source, shall continue to receive a level of support equal to or greater than the NIH stipend level zero for a period of six weeks for designated parental leave for the birth or adoption of a child. During parental leave, the University shall require no duties. In the event the fund source does not provide for six weeks paid parental leave, it shall be the responsibility of the principal investigator or department/ORU to provide the funding for its postdoctoral scholar. Postdocs who accrue paid sick leave and vacation leave are expected to use those days first. Maternity leave extending beyond 30 days may qualify as a disability and trainees on leave more than 30 days post partum may file a disability claim through the School of Medicine Office of Graduate Medical Education. (Note: this disability claim is filed through Human Resources now, contact Pat Grigal at pgrigal@hr.ucsf.edu)

Parental Leave without Pay

Visiting Postdoctorals are covered by APM 760-27, which states that parental leave without pay may be granted for up to one year to any academic appointee for the purpose of caring for a child. Normally, this unpaid leave, when combined with paid leave shall not exceed one year for each birth or adoption. A leave cannot be approved beyond the end date of the appointment.

According to this policy, you first have to use your accrued vacation and sick leave...if you run out of that before 6 weeks, then your PI must provide paid leave up to the 6 weeks.

Regarding disability insurance, see message from Pat Grigal that I forwarded to you yesterday.

>From Pat Grigal, May 17: "Hi, Chris -

No. We do not have state disability benefits. The residents/post docs have disability with Standard Insurance that is changing to Met Life 6/21/04. A pregnant post doc is entitled to 2 weeks of disability at 66 2/3 of regular pay if she is enrolled in the residents/post docs health plan. This assumes her claim is accepted and she has a normal delivery. Also see the attached benefits comparison sheet. I have the required forms and I send them out when the department or enrollee requests them. Dependents do not have the benefit.

Pat"

I hope this answers your questions. Sorry it has taken so long to get everything confirmed. Let me know if you have further questions.
